Three people have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at a block of flats in Carlisle.

It happened in Chatsworth Square just before 10pm on Tuesday.

One man was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, but was discharged later that night.

Two men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of arson following the incident.

The men, aged 29 and 56, and woman, aged 38, have since been released under investigation.

The property consisted of eight flats over three floors.

The fire was located in the airing cupboard on the first floor.

Everyone was evacuated from the property while firefighters tackled the blaze.

Crews from Carlisle East, Carlisle West and the Longtown stations all attended. Firefighters wearing breathing equipment used a hose reel jet and positive pressure ventilation unit.

They were at the scene for over an hour.

Police are continuing to appeal for information about the fire.
