A PEDESTRIAN has died after being hit by a train on the line between Carlisle and Newcastle.

The incident occurred at Tyne Green in Hexham shortly before 10.40am on Thursday morning.

A spokeswoman from British Transport Police said: "Police officers were called to the line close to Hexham station at 10.39am following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended the scene but sadly a person has been pronounced dead.

"Police are currently working to identify the person and inform their family."

The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Trains between Carlisle and Newcastle were affected after the line was closed, but it reopened at around 1.15pm.

Transport was sourced by Reay's and Green Mountain Travel to take passengers by bus between Carlisle and Hexham.
