Two men have been arrested by police investigating a robbery in Carlisle city centre.

Cumbria Police have confirmed that the men are being held in connection with the robbery at a jewellers' shop in Bank Street earlier today.

There was a major police response following the raid at St Nicholas Galleries in Bank Street at about 2.20pm.

Initial reports suggested three people were involved but it has now been confirmed there were only two.

Officers continue to appeal for information and are asking people to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Helen Harkins said: “We can confirm that following swift actions by officers this afternoon two men are now in custody.

“We are continuing to appeal for witnesses to this incident.

“This is a busy part of the city centre so we would urge anybody who saw anything suspicious in this area to contact us.

“If anybody saw anything that might be relevant please contact us on the numbers below.”

A blue Ford Fiesta, registration FM66 RYB, was involved in the incident.

It was found abandoned in the Chiswick Street area in the city centre.

It is the second time that the jewellers has been targeted by robbers in the space of three months.

There was a robbery there at the end March.
