Despite miserable weather, Carlisle Mencap’s fundraising barbecue went ahead with attendance from a special guest.
The High Sheriff of Cumbria, Marcia Reid Fotheringham, attended the barbecue at the Grace Little Centre which was held as part of the organisation’s efforts to raise £30,000 over the course of the next year to maintain the centre.
Phil Taylor, events and fundraising officer for Carlisle Mencap, said: “We took well over £200 on the day and the High Sheriff came to visit us, which was a real treat.
“She spoke to many of our service users and staff as well as guests and I know she was very impressed with the work we do at the Grace Little Centre.”
The centre was built in 2012 after the organisation raised more than £1m from public donations.
Mrs Reid Fotheringham said: "I had to commend all who attended.
"It ended up being a terrific day.
"And while I thank everyone I met, I especially thank the little girl who gave me a hug - and called me "princess.'"
"I was really glad to have attended."
