A MAN who punched a complete stranger to the ground in central Carlisle has been given a prison sentence.

Brady Rowland Wilson's unprovoked attack on Colin Percival occurred on English Street at about 1.30am on December 3 of 2017.

Carlisle Crown Court heard intoxicated Wilson, 29, walked straight up to Mr Percival and punched him in the face, saying: "Have some of this." Mr Percival, who fell to the ground and lost consciousness, received hospital treatment and had since spent more than £10,000 on dental work while his quality of life had "greatly decreased".

Wilson, of Holywell Crescent, Carlisle, admitted an actual bodily harm assault charge and was given a 13-month jail term today (TUES) by Judge James Adkin. He noted the defendant's "unusual medical background" and that he had spent time both in custody on remand, and in a psychiatric hospital. However, expert evidence had concluded Wilson did not need to be detained in hospital, and that drug and alcohol misuse had tipped his mental state "towards symptoms suggesting a psychotic illness".

Addressing Judge Adkin directly, Wilson promised he would continue to take prescribed medication. And when asked whether he had anything to say amount the assault itself, Wilson responded: "Just a proper apology for the actions that happened. I was under the influence of alcohol."
