Firefighters from both Carlisle stations were called to tackle a house on fire in the city.

Crews from Carlisle West and Carlisle East Fire Station attended the fire about 9.30pm on Bower Street.

The family had been alerted to the blaze by their working fire alarms and escaped from the house uninjured.

The actions of firefighters who were first on-site helped prevent more serious damage to the building and managed to confine the fire to the one bedroom.

A spokesman from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: "Thankfully the family had working fire alarms and it goes to show how important they are.

"There was minimal damage and the fire was contained.

"We used four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"At times like this, we want to make sure people understand what a difference having a smoke alarm can have.

"We want to remind everyone, if you don't have an alarm fitted, to call your local fire station and we will come and fit one for free."

Crews were at the scene for about two hours and are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
