ACROSS the county, there are plenty of great places to go out for a family meal.

Whether it be in Carlisle, Penrith, Keswick, Cockermouth, Whitehaven or Workington - there are loads to choose from.

This week, we asked readers of the News & Star to share their best places to go out for a family meal in the north and west of the county.

Here - in no particular order - are our readers’ choice.

1: THE GREENHILL HOTEL, WIGTON

Jennifer Armstrong said: “The Greenhill Hotel, excellent food, friendly staff.

“The menu has a great range of choices for everyone.

“Lovely warm friendly atmosphere.”

Thomas Barnes added: “For the best food with an amazing menu to suit everybody needs.

“Excellent staff with a warm cosy welcome.”

Chris Hird said: “The Greenhill Hotel, Wigton, is amazing.

“The food is outstanding and so are the staff.

“It has a lovely fire which makes the venue feel so homely and with the lovely friendly feel, you cannot beat it.”

2: THE APPLE TREE, CARLISLE

On Lowther Street in the city centre, the pub got a thumbs up from one reader.

Kieran Nixon said: “The Apple Tree, Carlisle.

“It’s just been done out and looks amazing inside.

“The food is really nice and it’s affordable too.”

3: THE CROSSKEYS, PENRITH

Rachael Thomson said: “The Crosskeys, Carleton, Penrith.

“Fantastic food, staff and views from restaurant are beautiful.

“Sunday lunch is a must.”

4: CLEAVERS, WHITEHAVEN

Natalie Claire Wilkinson said: “Definitely Cleavers in Whitehaven, a little hidden gem, amazing home cooked food both hearty and refined.

“A warm atmosphere and attentive staff, nothing is too much.”

5: THE CROWN & THISTLE, ROCKCLIFFE

The pub, at Rockcliffe to the north of Carlisle, was among those to be recommended.

Dave Robinson said: “The Crown & Thistle at Rockcliffe, hands down the best food around since they were at The Queens at Warwick.

“The best fish pie I’ve tasted, and I’ve never had a bad meal from them.

“It’s friendly, cosy, and I honestly can’t speak highly enough of them.”

6: METAL BRIDGE INN, NEAR CARLISLE

Carly Richardson said: “The Metal Bridge Inn near Carlisle.

“The food is great and venue cosy, comfortable and very welcoming.

“Choice of conservatory with view over the river Esk. You may be lucky to spot an otter or two.

“Prices are more than reasonable too. The staff are lovely.”

7: GIANNI’S PIZZERIA, CARLISLE

Jo Fenn said: “Gianni’s Carlisle is by far the best family friendly restaurant.

“The food is always fantastic and they always make you feel welcome, especially the children.”

8: THE CLICKHAM INN, PENRITH

Mike Walsh said: “The Clickham Inn. Wonderful food and glorious log fires with a warm welcome from the landlord and lady.”
