CARLISLE is now lit up and ready for Christmas, following the annual big switch-on event in the city centre.

Thousands arrived to see the city’s mayor, Councillor Marilyn Bowman flick the switch at 5pm yesterday.

Prior to the big moment, crowds were entertained by a whole host of celebrity acts and local talent, who showcased their skills on the specially-erected stage.

The Wanted and Glee star, Max George was welcomed onto the stage with a huge cheer.

He sang hits including Barcelona, Glad you Came and Chasing the Sun.

Speaking after his performance, he said: “It was great. I really enjoyed it.

“It’s great seeing people enjoying it.

“I remember doing a gig about 10 years ago with The Wanted in Carlisle and the atmosphere was great then.”

Despite the cold weather, the rain stayed away as thousands of people gathered in front of the Old Town Hall in the city centre, for the ceremony hosted by Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist, Barbara Nice.

She had residents of the city in fits of laughter as she entertained them and engaged with the people around her.

The comedian said: “I have done performances like this before at light switch-ons, but this is the biggest.

“Everyone is so friendly, it’s a great atmosphere.”

Debbie McHugh from Carlisle was ready and waiting for East 17 to perform.

She said: “I’ve not been for a few years but I’m looking forward to it. I hope East 17 will sing Stay Another Day.”

After Mrs Bowman lit up Carlisle in an array of sparkling colours, East 17 took to the stage, wowing the audience - and Debbie in particular - with their classic Christmas song.

Yesterday was the first time Christine Wheatley from Carlisle has attended the lights.

She said: “I’ve lived her for 20 years and never been.

“This is the first year I have a granddaughter so that’s brought me out, I’m loving it.

“I love Carlisle at Christmas and I’m excited to see East 17.”

Ahead of their performance they told the News & Star: “We’ve been all over the country this week turning lights on.

“We’re really excited and feeling good about this one.

“We’re in the Christmas spirit ready to entertain Carlisle.

“We did a sound check before and it’s the best sound we’ve had all week.”
