Rail travellers faced major disruption after damaged overhead power lines halted services between Carlisle and Scotland last week. Our readers had their say on the News & Star website and Facebook page.
The same thing happened last weekend between Penrith and Carlisle, something needs to be done to find a proper solution.

Bring back locomotives, or steam.

That is the risk you take when you choose to travel by train.

I’ve just had to get the bus from Glasgow Central to Carlisle, pretty quick journey to be fair! Also, train from Manchester to Carlisle on Monday was delayed ...our railway system is rubbish.

I’ve travelled on four trains in the last couple of days. Every one was late, but the last one we were told a minute before pulling into Preston that we all had to get off as staff couldn’t travel any further. Had to wait an hour to get next TransPennine train as we were not allowed to use our tickets on any other train. Utterly shambolic.

My niece was going to Edinburgh on Sunday, they got on the train then was told to get off as it had been cancelled. No other transport was put on, her weekend was ruined and the kids were so disappointed.

I missed my flight on Wednesday due to cancelled TransPennine train to Edinburgh and the minibus missed my stop at Haymarket and arrived late... So pleased I stayed up here for my next flight as it would of happened again.

This never happened with steam trains.

It was the same last weekend it was awful. Three trains cancelled and all the passengers got on one train, so it was rather a bad journey.

It’s called wear and tear, things break down just like cars, washing machines etc and the railway is now running over capacity. Dr Beeching closed down so much of the network as it was ‘unprofitable’ and a lot of old trackbeds have had houses etc built over them making it nigh on impossible to re-open lines that could be used as a diversionary route (eg the line from Carlisle to Tweedbank and on to Edinburgh).

Not again. It’s constantly being cut off north and south and east and west! Think we need the new car park behind citadel for coaches! Oh, it’s out of commission due to neglected building demolition!
