The EFL say clubs will vote on formal proposals that could see the summer transfer deadline return to the end of August for the likes of Carlisle United.

The league today announced that clubs have given their backing to a "split" August deadline, with League One and Two clubs getting longer to make signings than Championship clubs.

Clubs from the bottom two tiers have indicated their support for the revised approach, which would see an end-of-August deadline for all signings made by League One and Two clubs, but an August 8 deadline for Championship clubs.

That would mark a change from the present system, which this season saw an August 8 deadline for all EFL clubs - although they could still sign loan players or free agents until the end of the month.

A formal vote will be taken next month.

The league said in a statement: "The matter has been on the agenda for discussion with EFL clubs in recent weeks and months, with Championship clubs supporting a proposal put forward at a meeting in February whereby the deadline for all incoming permanent and loan registrations closes on 8 August.

"Following further debate, representatives from League One and League Two have this week backed a different approach, agreeing to a deadline at the end of August for all signings.

"A formal vote on the matter will now be put to clubs at an Extraordinary General Meeting in April in order to ensure clubs have sufficient time to prepare ahead of the summer transfer window opening in June."

Outgoing EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey said clubs "have been given the opportunity to determine the direction of travel" on the matter.

He said there was "strong support" for a different approach between Championship and League One and Two clubs.

Harvey added it would be a priority to ensure "that everyone has a clear understanding of the arrangements as soon as possible so as to ensure plans can be put in place for next season."
