Former Carlisle United chief Michael Knighton has pledged to bring out a book about his controversial time at Brunton Park next year.

The ex-Blues supremo, in charge at the club from 1992-2002, is currently promoting a book on his earlier involvement with Manchester United.

That is written by Phillip Vine, but Knighton says he is writing the Carlisle follow-up himself. On Twitter, he said: “Many thanks all for the kind messages re P Vine’s forthcoming book about my time at Man U. I apologise for the title of the book this has NOTHING to do with me.

“The book does not cover CUFC because I am writing that story, that book will be out next year. Thanks again v much x.”

Knighton has also claimed to be planning a speaking engagement in Carlisle this year. No details have yet been revealed.

His tenure at Brunton Park saw an initial period of success, including two promotions and Wembley appearances, before descending into struggle and bitter dispute with fans before he finally sold to John Courtenay.

He returned to the spotlight last week when he gave his first televised interview for many years to ITV Granada, as he discussed the Manchester United book, entitled “Visionary”, which covers his high-profile Old Trafford takeover bid in 1989 and subsequent spell on the board.

He said he did not want the book to carry that title because it would be a "hostage to fortune".

Knighton's website, though, claims that those who describe him as a visionary are “intelligently perceptive and benign observers”.

The Manchester United book, published by Pitch Publishing, is out next month and is said to include material from Knightons diaries.

Knighton has, in recent years, re-emerged as an “artist and poet”.
