NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Nashville leaders want to rename a downtown street after civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis.

Community leaders want to rename 5th Avenue, where the Woolworth building is located, Rep. John Lewis Way. Lewis, who was laid to rest last week, was part of many iconic moments in Nashville.

At a time when African Americans were refused service at lunch counters, Lewis led the Nashville sit-in movement while in college -- turning Nashville into the first Southern city to desegregate public facilities.

At-large council member Zulfat Suara, who is leading the street renaming effort, says the community needs to show support for the idea. People can make their voices heard Tuesday at 6 p.m. during a Zoom meeting. If you'd like to attend and give your feedback, here’s the link.
