BISMARCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) reports that traffic fatalities in the state are down overall in 2020 compared to the same time last year.

NDDOT Safety Public Information Program Manager Lauren Bjork says they consider a majority of fatal crashes in North Dakota as “preventable.”

She says they have several programs to promote safe driving in North Dakota.

Bjork added that their Click It or Ticket Campaign is currently underway through August 13th.

All of these steps are helping NDDOT and the state reach their goal of zero vehicle fatalities.

In 2020 so far, North Dakota has seen:

-Five motorcycle fatalities. Up from one during the same period in 2019.
-Five ATV/recreational vehicle fatalities. Up from zero during the same period in 2019 and higher than the 2019 total of four.
-Three pedestrian fatalities. Down from five during the same period in 2019.
-Eleven alcohol-related crash fatalities. Down from 19 during the same period in 2019.
