The Jefferson City Lady Jays and Camdenton Lady Lakers warm up for volleyball matches Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, at Fleming Fieldhouse.

Having five players at least 5 feet, 10 inches tall comes in handy.

But when that height is paired with the development of volleyball skills, it becomes more of a weapon.

The Jefferson City Lady Jays won the battles at the net and they dominated on the scoreboard Tuesday in a 25-12, 25-19 victory against the Camdenton Lady Lakers at Fleming Fieldhouse.

Sarah Linthacum (6-3) and Rhakala Blackmon (6-0) each had two blocks and Kayla Walters (5-10) added one.

"I thought Rhakala Blackmon had an absolutely off the charts blocking night tonight," Jefferson City coach Lisa Hoffmeyer said. "She was pretty exceptional just finding the ball, chasing it down, and doing a better job with keeping up with faster paced stuff, which was kind of the only thing that she was having a problem with before."

The Lady Jays never trailed in the first set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead after Blackmon's first block.

Jefferson City later used a 5-0 run to lead 16-5, capping the run with a Blackmon block.

"We knew if she had time to get there, she could jump well enough, was intelligent enough, was big enough and athletic enough to turn it back in and get those blocks," Hoffmeyer said. "But now she is starting to see and understand the game a little bit better."

The Lady Jays were also efficient in their attack.

Annabelle Maassen and setter Paige Reeser each made a pass to each other before Maassen pushed the ball to the back corner for a 17-8 lead.

Walters leaped up to smack the ball down with two hands for a 24-12 lead and Linthacum found the back corner to end the opening set.

Maassen had 11 kills, Walters finished with seven and Blackmon added three.

"Attacking percentage in the first game, if I remember correctly, is that we were at 38 percent," Hoffmeyer said. "That's really high. Occasionally we'll get a couple individuals at those numbers, but rarely are we there as an entire team. That was a good highlight for us tonight."

The only lead for Camdenton came at 1-0 in the second set.

Jefferson City quickly made it 7-3 and led 20-11 before getting a couple bench players got some time on the court.

The Lady Jays got 14 players on the floor Tuesday. That depth has been beneficial in practice.

"We get to have six-on-six competition at practice really consistently," Hoffmeyer said. "They're playing against some really talented teammates who can run a fast offense, so they're getting that exposure not only on big game nights and tournament weekends, but also every day in our gym."

Reeser tallied 22 assists to lead Jefferson City. Maassen led the team with 13 digs, Rylie Bohanan finished with 10 digs, Walters had seven and Sydney Vogt added five.

"She's really coming along in defense," Hoffmeyer said of Vogt. "And she's another one that we can plug into the front row any time we need to as well. We feel pretty comfortable with her in that role."

Jefferson City (18-2-1) plays today at Lebanon.

Camdenton won the JV match 25-10, 25-15 to drop Jefferson City's record to 6-7.

Abby Blake tallied nine assists and five digs, while Emma Loesch added seven digs.

In the freshman match, Camdenton won 25-27, 29-27, 25-21 to drop Jefferson City's record to 7-8.

Lauren Reid led the Lady Jays with 12 assists and 17 digs. Grace Spalding contributed 14 digs and three aces.
