A Mississippi restaurant employee was reportedly fired after a picture of a racist receipt from a drive-thru surfaced on Facebook.
Alexia Washington, a student at the University of Mississippi, and a friend placed an order at Who Dat's Drive-Thru in Oxford, Mississippi, on June 7, and later noticed the label that the restaurant's employee gave for her order, written atop her receipt.
"Black bi***es in a silver car," the receipt read.
Her friend Jakez Smith shared a photo of the receipt in a Facebook post, along with a description of the transaction and an allegation that a manager "laughed in [Washington's] face" upon explaining what had transpired.
Since then, Who Dat's Drive-Thru has issued an apology and apparently fired the unidentified employee who issued the receipt with the racial slur.
"If you create an environment where people feel comfortable to say things like that, to act in that manner, then you are enabling the problem," Washington told WTVA. "I'm trying to figure out ways to move forward and make Oxford a more progressive place."
Who Dat's Drive-Thru wrote an explanation and apology on Facebook, saying, "From the bottom of my heart I would like to apologize to the young ladies that were attacked by this injustice. We have a lot of work to do as humans & a representative of the community ... I would like to inform everyone that I will not condone this anywhere."
Wylie Coleman, the reported owner of the restaurant, signed the apology. He added that he spent time speaking with Washington about how to best serve the community. He also called the receipt label "a vivid insult describing oppression."
Coleman apparently told the New York Daily News in an email that the incident "has never happened before," and he wanted to "reiterate the employee was terminated immediately."
