N.H. House And Senate Budget Negotiators Get To Work

Ali Oshinskie / NHPR
N.H. lawmakers are bearing down on a state budget deadline this week, and next.

Budget negotiations are underway in Concord to reconcile differences in the spending plans adopted by the New Hampshire House and Senate.

Budget writers kicked off their negotiation with the Senate agreeing with the House and adding $15 million to revenue estimates.

Then it was on to evaluating points of difference in a two-year budget that will likely spend around $13 billion, line by line. Mary Jane Wallner is the House's lead negotiator.

'I will go through and announce the things the House would like to put on hold. If it is not put on hold, then the House is willing to agree to that item, and the first item that is on hold is ... on page three."

Dozens more items were put on hold. Among them parts of the budget dealing with school funding, taxes, Medicaid rates, and plans to create a new secure psychiatric unit.

Lawmakers have until Thursday to ready a budget for a vote by the full Legislature next week.
