N.J. park reopens 9 days after coyote attacks

The Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Bergen County reopened on Monday, more than a week after aggressive coyote attacks injured a woman and a dog.

“We are pleased to announce that (reservation) in Mahwah is now reopened,” the county stated on its website. “Park enthusiasts should always remain vigilant as they enjoy our beautiful natural preserves.”

Acting on advice from the state, sheriff’s officers closed the park after the woman and dog were attacked within hours of each other on Oct. 5 in the same area of the 4,000-acre reservation.

It was unclear whether the same coyote was involved in both attacks.

Officers with the state’s Division of Fish and Wildlife spent last week setting traps for coyotes and testing for rabies, according to Larry Hajna, spokesman for the Department of Environmental Protection.

State and county officials were not immediately available early Tuesday to say whether any coyotes had been caught.
