31-year-old man shot dead in Newark

A 31-year-old man was found shot and killed in a parking lot in Newark on Wedesday, authorities said.

Police found Anthony Starks, of Newark, in a lot on the 400 block of Littleton Avenue around 5:30 p.m., the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Starks was pronounced dead at University Hospital in the city at 5:54 p.m. No arrests have been made as authorities investigate.

The fatal shooting came two days after the prosecutor’s office and Newark police held a press conference in which officials touted the city’s 12 percent crime drop this year. That follows a 19 percent reduction from 2017 to 2018.

Shootings are down 13 percent, a continuing decline since the 30 percent reduction since 2017. As of Monday, there had been 34 homicides in Newark this year, 10 less than at the same point the previous year.

The state’s largest city had five homicides in Newark last week, though.
