19-year-old shot on Newark street dies a day later

A 19-year-old was shot on Sunday in Newark and died a day later in a hospital from his injuries, authorities said.

Waleik McCollum was shot at approximately 3:40 p.m. on the 100 block of Brookdale Avenue in Newark. McCollum, of Newark, was transported to University Hospital and pronounced dead at 10:21 p.m. on Sept. 30, authorities said Wednesday.

No arrests have been made, authorities added. It’s the sixth fatal shooting in the city reported by authorities for the month of September.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is continuing to investigate.
