Pedestrian struck and killed by car near Newark Penn Station

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car across the street from Newark Penn Station early Monday, authorities said.

The woman was hit around 2:20 a.m. near the intersection of Market Street and McCarter Highway (Route 21), the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

She was taken to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:53 a.m.

The driver stopped and cooperated with police. No charges have been filed, though the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is still investigating.

The woman’s identity has not been determined yet.
