Police investigate fatal shooting of 27-year-old in Newark

Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old man in Newark on Memorial Day.

Haneef Sanders, of Newark, was shot on the first block of Maple Avenue in the city’s Weequahic neighborhood, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said. He was transported to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:16 p.m.

No arrests have been made.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating the shooting.
