A New Jersey food destination is once again being claimed by its neighbors across the Hudson River.
White Mana in Jersey City, which has been serving up cheeseburgers since the 1939 World’s Fair (and starting in Jersey City since 1946), was just named home of the eighth best burgers in New York by Eater.com.
Twenty-six of the burger spots on the list are scattered through New York City, mostly in Manhattan but with a few in Brooklyn and Queens. But White Mana, whose sliders have made the 24-hour greasy spoon a culinary destination, got the Garden State on the list, geography be damned.
“While it has been located in Jersey City since 1946, White Mana’s burger stand started off at the 1936 World’s Fair in Flushing, Queens," Eater writes. "It serves classic sliders, with cheese and pickles, for $1.12 a pop. Plus, it’s open 24 hours.”
Point taken. Eater is wrong about the year of the World’s Fair, but they’re right that White Mana technically got its start east of the Hudson.
The beefy bestowment comes after The New York Times famously said the best pizza in New York was at Razza in Jersey City, which — checks notes — is also not in New York.
This should come as no surprise. White Mana is routinely mentioned on lists like this, including the same list last year.
