Times of Trenton week 5 football picks

Heading into week five of the high school football season, there are still four area teams with unblemished records. There are also three squads that have yet to win a contest.

Will either of those numbers change this week?

THURSDAY GAME

New Egypt (1-3) at Holy Cross Prep (2-3), 7 p.m.: A Thursday night special, with the Warriors traveling to face a Holy Cross Prep that has struggled to get in the win column of late. This may be a coin flip contest.

Mike’s pick: Holy Cross Prep 17, New Egypt 14.

Sean’s pick: Holy Cross Prep 19, New Egypt 6.

FRIDAY GAMES

(All games 7 p.m. unless listed)

Ewing (0-5) at Delran (4-1): Ewing has struggled to score, and that will not be a problem for Delran in this game.

Mike’s pick: Delran 21, Ewing 10.

Sean’s pick: Delran 35, Ewing 0.

Florence (2-3) vs. Bordentown (0-4): The Flashes lost last week, so that means they will win this week. Devonte German gets back on track for Florence.

Mike’s pick: Florence 42, Bordentown 14.

Sean’s pick: Florence 35, Bordentown 0.

Hamilton West (3-1) at Hopewell Valley (4-0): Tough game to call here for the WJFL Valley Division title. Kevin Boswell may well run wild for the Hornets, but the key may be the injury to Henry Lewis.

Mike’s pick: Hopewell Valley 21, Hamilton West 14.

Sean’s pick: Hamilton West 19, Hopewell Valley 13.

Hightstown (1-4) at Notre Dame (5-0): The Rams have lost four of the last five meetings against the Irish and are coming off a 63-27 loss to West Windsor-Plainsboro. Meanwhile, Notre Dame has been untouchable in conference play, outscoring opponents 233-38.

Mike’s pick: Notre Dame 35, Hightstown 7.

Sean’s pick: Notre Dame 35, Hightstown 0.

Lawrence (2-2) at Princeton (0-4): Lawrence has turned it around over the last two weeks, and will move over .500 here. Look for over 300+ yards rushing for the Cardinals new attack.

Mike’s pick: Lawrence (no score prediction)

Sean’s pick: Lawrence (no score prediction)

New Providence (3-1) at South Hunterdon (2-3): The Eagles have landed. After a 2-0 start, South Hunterdon has lost three straight games. Make that four, as New Providence heads to town.

Mike’s pick: New Providence 21, South Hunterdon 14.

Sean’s pick: New Providence 42, South Hunterdon 6.

Nottingham (2-3) at WW-P (1-3): Coming in off a 63-point performance last weekend, the Pirates will host a Nottingham team that has lost two of three, and has not been able to get much offense going. That will be an issue in this contest.

Mike’s pick: Nottingham 28, WW-P 14.

Sean’s pick: WW-P 34, Nottingham 12.

Trenton (3-2) at Allentown (1-4): Massive game for Trenton, which need to get its season back on track after two losses in two weeks. James Hubbard may return under center for the Tornadoes. Allentown just needs to find a way to get something going this season.

Mike’s pick: Trenton 20, Allentown 14.

Sean’s pick: Trenton 28, Allentown 13.

SATURDAY GAMES

Montgomery (4-1) at Scotch Plains-Fanwood (2-3), 1 p.m.: Montgomery’s two quarterbacks, Ryan Furey and Marco Lainez have been on fire, combining for 678 yards and eight touchdowns passing in the last two games. The Raiders, meanwhile, have been struggling, losing to both North Hunterdon, a team the Cougars beat, and Immaculata, a team Montgomery defeated 35-0.

Mike’s pick: Montgomery 35, Scotch Plains-Fanwood 7.

Sean’s pick: Montgomery 35, Scotch Plains-Fanwood 0.

Robbinsville (5-0) at Riverside (1-3), 1:30 p.m.: Riverside faces the same problem five other Robbinsville opponents have not yet solved. How does Riverside stop the Ravens’ offense and quarterback Danny Surtz? Halfway through the season, Surtz has already thrown for 944 yards and seven touchdowns.

Mike’s pick: Robbinsville 28, Riverside 10.

Sean’s pick: Robbinsville 24, Riverside 0.

Lawrenceville (1-4) at Peddie (4-0), 2 p.m.: The Falcons are undefeated and have scored 203 points in just four games behind the talented Mark Sluka, who has accounted for a combined 13 touchdowns rushing and passing so far this season. The Big Red is trying to snap a four game losing streak and will need some luck if it is to repeat its stunning 18-16 upset win over Peddie in 2017.

Mike’s pick: Peddie 35, Lawrenceville 10.

Sean’s pick: Peddie 35, Lawrenceville 0.

Tower Hill (5-0) at Pennington (4-1), 2:30 p.m.: The unbeaten Hillers are always a tough test for the Red Raiders and this season’s edition sports a solid and effective ground game. The Pennington offense will need to stay hot and the defense will need to step it up this Saturday if the Red Raiders expect to win.

Mike’s pick: Tower Hill 28, Pennington 21.

Sean’s pick: Pennington 27, Tower Hill 26.

Hill (0-5) at Hun (4-1), 3 p.m.: Hill is winless and is coming off a 42-7 loss to Peddie. This week the Rams should expect more of the same as it faces the Raiders in a MAPL game. Hun not only has a powerful offense, scoring 200 points in its four wins, but has a big, quick line and a smothering defense.

Mike’s pick: Hun 42, Hill 6.

Sean’s pick: Hun 35, Hill 0.

Northern Burlington (3-2): Bye week.

Steinert (1-4): Bye week.
