Times of Trenton week 6 recap: teams make playoff pushes, while others fall flat

FRIDAY GAMES

Bordentown (0-6): The Scotties scored 13 points, but ended up falling 42-13 to Robbinsville. Bordentown took a 13-6 lead through Jayden Bryant and Kerry Nicholas, but then got blitzed by a strong Ravens’ defense.

Next game: Friday, Nov. 1, at Palmyra, 7 p.m.

Ewing (1-6): The Blue Devils are in the win column, after a thrilling 30-27 win over Bishop Eustace. Ewing scored in the final seconds to pull out the victory.

Next game: Friday, Oct. 25, at Cinnaminson, 7 p.m.

Hightstown (1-6): The Rams took a 7-0 lead over Northern Burlington, then everything fell apart on homecoming night. Hightstown ended up losing 39-7.

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 26, at Hamilton West, 2 p.m.

Hopewell Valley (4-2): The Bulldogs ran into the Notre Dame buzzsaw, falling 41-6. Hopewell Valley’s lone score came in the final minutes from Tommy Belsky.

Next game, Friday, Oct. 26, at Princeton, 11 a.m.

Lawrence (4-2): The Cardinals have turned their whole season around after the first two weeks. Lawrence routed Steinert 28-7 behind another strong rushing night. Careem Frost had over 100 yards and two touchdowns in the dominant second half performance.

Next game: Friday, Oct. 25, at Cherry Hill West, 6 p.m.

Montgomery (6-1): The Cougars went to Watchung Hills and pulled out a massive 21-14 victory, to all but lock up a North, Section 4 playoff berth. Alex Benitez had a rushing score, while Ryan Furey found Carter McFadden twice, including from 55-yards with 10 minutes to go to win the game.

Next game: Friday, Oct. 25, Perth Amboy, 7 p.m.

New Egypt (1-5): The Warriors lost 40-0 to Gloucester City.

Next game: Friday, Nov 1, Florence, 7 p.m.

Northern Burlington (4-2): The Greyhounds came out after a lackluster first half and dominated Hightstown in a 39-7 win. Michael Caloiaro threw for 390 yards and four touchdowns, with Bryce Barron (160 yards, two TDs) and Victor Mushinski (150 yards on 13 catches, one TD) the main targets. Now, Northern Burlington has a shot to win the WJFL Patriot outright, and make the playoffs.

Next game: Friday, Oct. 25, at Delran, 7 p.m.

Notre Dame (7-0): Coleon Williams broke off touchdown runs of 40 and 54 yards to lead the Irish over Hopewell Valley 42-6 Friday night. Quarterback Jake Renda completed 11 of 16 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns while Ricky Spruil scored two touchdowns, including an 85 yard kickoff return.

Next game: Friday, Oct. 25, Nottingham, 7 p.m.

Princeton (0-6): Lost 47-0 to WW-P.

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 26, Hopewell Valley, 11 a.m.

Robbinsville (7-0): The Ravens remained unbeaten by breezing past Bordentown 42-13. Tien-Amir Siplin rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns while quarterback Danny Surtz ran for a pair of touchdowns and completed seven of 11 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown.

Next game: Friday, Oct. 25, Wildwood, 6:30 p.m.

South Hunterdon (2-5): Lost 40-7 to Brearley.

Next game: Friday, Oct. 25, Middlesex, 7 p.m.

Steinert (1-5): Spartans’ struggles continued in a 28-7 loss to Lawrence. Will Laster had a five-yard run for the lone Steinert score.

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 26, Trenton, 12 p.m.

West Windsor-Plainsboro (3-3): The Pirates went to the air to defeat Princeton 47-0. Quarterback Shane Johnson completed seven of nine passes for 198 yards and five touchdowns. Two of those touchdown strikes were caught by Brandon Drayton, who scored on receptions of 43 and 21 yards.

Next game: Friday, Oct. 25, at Allentown, 6 p.m.

SATURDAY GAMES

Allentown (2-4): The Redbirds put up a fight late against Burlington Township, but ultimately fell 36-25. Dan Merkel was 14-of-23 for 197 yards with three TDs.

Next game, Friday, Oct. 25, West Windsor-Plainsboro, 7 p.m.

Hamilton West (5-1): The Hornets’ defense forced seven turnovers to help defeat Nottingham in the Bromley, 21-12. Joe Laezza had two interceptions, Andy Figueroa recovered two fumbles, and Kevin Boswell rushed for 185 yards and a touchdown.

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 26, Hightstown, 2 p.m.

Hun (5-1): The Raiders defeated Lawrenceville 54-7. Ian Franzoni ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass for another. Ahmad Dixon had two rushing touchdowns while Nick DeGennaro had 150 receiving yards.

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 26, at Peddie, 2 p.m.

Lawrenceville (1-6): The Big Red lost its fifth straight, falling to Hun 54-7 in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League game. Dylan Pinkins rushed for the Big Red’s lone touchdown. Quarterback Drew Friedman completed seven of 12 passes for 86 yards.

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 26, at Blair, 4:30 p.m.

Nottingham (2-5): The Northstars got 8 for 14 passing from freshman quarterback Joe Lemly but lost to visiting Hamilton 21-12. Lemly threw for 47 yards and a touchdown while Marc Kauffman rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown and had a pair of sacks on defense.

Next game: Friday, Oct. 25, at Notre Dame, 7 p.m.

Peddie (6-0): The Falcons remained unbeaten by defeating Capital Prep of Connecticut 48-8. Justin Shorter caught 11 passes for 142 yards and three touchdowns and returned an interception for a fourth TD. Davis Warren completed 12 of 26 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns while Matt Sluka scored two touchdowns.

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 26, Hun, 2 p.m.

Pennington (4-3): Quarterback Jay Jackson was intercepted three times and held to 6 for 20 passing for 130 yards as the Red Raiders fell to Academy New Church 42-14. Jackson accounted for both Pennington scores, rushing for one touchdown and completing a 15 yard pass to Max Gibbard for the other.

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 26, at Springfield, 7 p.m.

Trenton (3-4): It has all gone the wrong way for the Tornadoes, who scored just six points in a 16-6 loss to Eastern. Trenton should win next week to give itself a chance to make the playoffs, but with four straight losses, it might be a moot point.

Bryce Barron, WR, Sr.: Michael Caloiaro, QB, Sr.: Victor Mushinski, WR, Sr., Northern Burlington: Caloiaro threw for 390 yards and four scores, while the receiving duo combined for 310 yards and three scores, in a 39-7 win.

TIMES AREA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Carter McFadden, WR/CB, Montgomery: In addition to his two receiving scores, including the game-winner, he picked off two passes in the fourth quarter to help seal the win for the Cougars.

TOP COACHING JOB OF THE WEEK

Zoran Milich, Montgomery: He is making his case in style as the top head coach in the area this season. Montgomery knocked off a good Watchung Hills team 21-14 to move to 6-1.

Northern Burlington (4-2) at Delran (5-1), Friday, Oct. 26, 7 p.m.: The de facto WJFL Patriot title game, and also what amounts to a possible sectional play in contest.

Hun (5-1) at Peddie (6-0), Saturday, Oct. 26, 2 p.m.: This is unquestionably the game of the year in Mercer County, with these two squads light years ahead of any other in the area. Which team will own MAPL superiority?
