The fire that badly damaged a large, three-story home and illuminated a part of Trenton’s West Ward Thursday night started under suspicious circumstances, the fire department said Friday.

The home in the 800 block of Edgewood Avenue was vacant for many years and had no utilities, fire department spokesman Battalion Chief Todd Willever said Friday. The exact cause of the 9:45 p.m. fire is under investigation.

Firefighters knew of the home’s long-abandoned status and mainly stayed outside the house in a defensive mode, Willever said. Two alarms of fire companies had the blaze under control late Thursday, but units remained at the scene until nearly 5 a.m. Friday.

Some firefighters suffered minor injuries traversing the property’s sloping lawns, but none required a trip to the hospital.
