Naxolone is available for free at several Trenton pharmacies

A supply of naxolone has been made available Tuesday for free in five Trenton area pharmacies thanks to the New Jersey Department of Human Resources.

“I want to thank the state of New Jersey Department of Human Services for providing this resource to help reduce the risk of people dying from an overdose,” said Trenton Fire Director Derrick Sawyer.

Those that need to obtain the overdose reversal drug, also known as Narcan, don’t need a prescription, proof of insurance or to disclose their name. It is limited to one per person and is only available at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis.

As of April 2019, there have been 36 suspected drug-related deaths in Mercer County and 871 across the state, according to the NJ Department of Human Resources website. Naxolone can reverse the affects of a opioid overdose.

The three Trenton pharmacies that carry the drug are RiteAid at 1801 Kuser Road, Walgreens at 1096 Route 33 and Westside Pharmacy at 215 N. Hermitage Ave. The ShopRite pharmacies in Hamilton Square and in Ewing on North Olden Avenue are also offering access to the drug.

“The opioid epidemic has claimed countless lives, and this drug can help prevent more deaths,” said Mayor Reed Gusciora. “If you or a loved one are struggling with addiction, please know there are resources available to help.”
