Man shot multiple times during encounter with Trenton cop charged with weapons offenses

The man shot multiple times by a Trenton police officer during an encounter Sunday afternoon on a city street has been charged with weapons offenses as he remains in stable condition at a hospital.

Joseph Reeves, 37, was found just after 4 p.m. on the 1900 block of Calhoun Street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday.

An on-duty Trenton police officer was at the scene and the circumstances surrounding the officer’s encounter with Reeves are under investigation, authorities said.

Police at the scene found bullet holes in a silver Kia Optima Reeves had been driving. Authorities said police also recovered a Ruger .357 Magnum revolver from the driver’s side floor.

Video from the scene showed three bullet holes in the front passenger window, and a large hole smashed into the rear driver’s side door window.

Reeves was charged with first-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree certain persons not to possess a weapon.

Reeves was considered critically injured when he was taken to a hospital, but authorities said Monday he is in stable condition.

A first court appearance hasn’t been scheduled.

The Mercer County Homicide Task Force is investigating the shooting.
