The flu has claimed the life of another New Jersey child this season, state health officials announced Tuesday.

The child, described only as a North Jersey toddler, died earlier this month. The New Jersey Department of Health was able to confirm the child died from complications of influenza after lab testing and consulting with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week.

The health department said it would not be releasing any additional information on the child.

“This sad news is a reminder that children, the elderly, and people with certain health conditions are at high risk for serious flu complications,” Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal said. “Flu activity remains high throughout the state. Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the illness.”

A child from the state’s “central region” died in late December, and was the first pediatric flu death of this season, the department said.

Health officials said that everyone should take the necessary precautions during the flu season by washing or disinfecting their hands, covering their mouths when they cough or sneeze and stay home and call their doctor if they are sick; especially if they have a fever.

The department also encouraged people to get the flu vaccine.

“Vaccination is critical for health car workers to protect patients, caregivers, and themselves," Elnahal said.

Officials have said pregnant woman, children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems should also get the flu vaccine.

Residents can find flu vaccination clinics near them by calling their local health department or by visiting https://www.cdc.gov/flu/freeresources/flu-finder-widget.html.
