Trenton schools Superintendent Frederick McDowell will be leaving the school district on Aug. 30.

The separation was a “mutual agreement” between the superintendent and the Board of Education and the board has begun transition planning, according to a statement released by the district. No one from the district responded to a request for additional comments on McDowell’s departure.

“The board is proud of the progress made over the last two years and will continue to build upon that success," said James Rolle on behalf of the board. "We wish Dr. McDowell well in his future endeavors.”

McDowell’s contract with a $177,500 salary was originally scheduled to end June 30, 2022. He joined the district in 2017.

This will be the sixth superintendent for the district within the last 10 years. His departure comes just as a new high school nears completion.

“I wish Dr. McDowell all the best and thank him for his service,” said Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora. “I am confident the new board in place will conduct an extensive search to find the most qualified candidate to lead the district in its next chapter, which will include the opening of a state of the art Trenton Central High School this fall.”
