Why Rutgers can’t escape the wrath of ex-Ohio State coach Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer terrorized Rutgers when he was the head coach at Ohio State. Even after retiring from coaching (again) this offseason, he may still be involved in a Buckeye beatdown of the Scarlet Knights this year.

Meyer will be a studio analyst for the Big Ten Network during the 2019 season, the conference announced Thursday. It comes in addition to his duties at Fox Sports, where he will also be a studio analyst for its college football coverage.

The likelihood of him working on a broadcast of a Scarlet Knights contest is very high. Most of, if not all of Rutgers’ 2019 contests will be played on either the conference’s network or Fox Sports.

The development gives Meyer a number of chances to analyze and comment on the Scarlet Knights throughout their fourth season under his former defensive coordinator.

Rutgers head coach Chris Ash worked under Meyer for two seasons as his DC in Columbus, including a 2014 campaign in which the Buckeyes won a national championship.

Ash has not seen the same success in Piscataway, however, going 7-29 in his first three seasons as a head coach.

The results against Ohio State have been even uglier. Meyer’s Buckeyes outscored Ash’s Scarlet Knights 166-3 in three contests.

Meyer will be joined by the usual suspects Dave Revsine, Mike Hall and Rick Pizzo in studio, along with BTN and FOX Sports veterans Gerry DiNardo, Howard Griffith, Glen Mason and Dave Wannstedt, two-time All-Big Ten defensive tackle at Michigan Mike Martin and former Ohio State linebacker Joshua Perry, according to a press release from the conference.

Rutgers opens its season on Friday, Aug. 30 against UMass, while the Buckeyes start the 2019 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 31 against Lane Kiffin’s Florida Atlantic.
