UPDATED FORECAST SUNDAY: Snow, ice in Monday forecast. Latest on timing, snowfall totals.
The forecast for snow Monday has increased with a storm expected to hit Morris, Passaic Sussex and Warren counties the hardest with a wintry mix expected for much of the northern half of the state, the National Weather Service said in an update Saturday evening.
Those counties could see up to 4 inches of snowfall Monday night into Tuesday, the weather service said. Only a wintry mix of rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow was previously expected to hit northern New Jersey.
The National Weather Service is calling for up to 4 inches of snow on Monday and the potential for icy conditions. The northern half of the state should see at least an inch of snow.
The timing could affect both the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes, the weather service says.
The weather service reported earlier this afternoon that the amount of snow and ice was uncertain due to a transition of precipitation types for this time of year.
There is currently a 75% chance of 2 inches of snow or more in Sussex, a 77% percent chance in Morristown and an 81% likelihood for Belvidere, the National Weather Service said.
A coating of ice could also cause concerns for drivers.
