A snowstorm is expected to hit North and Central Jersey on Sunday evening, and it could make for a slippery Monday morning commute.

Sunday was forecast to start out sunny with an increase in clouds in the afternoon, said Carlie Buccola, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The snow will begin falling Sunday night between 8 and 10 p.m. About 1 to 2 inches is expected to accumulate before changing over to a mix of freezing rain and sleet Monday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m. for Bergen, Essex, Hunterdon, Morris, Passaic, Somerset and Warren counties.

The precipitation will change to rain before tapering off Monday afternoon, Buccola said.

Light snow is expected to begin in Monmouth and Ocean counties between 9 and 11 p.m. Sunday. A slushy accumulation of up to 1 inch is possible, mainly in grassy areas, before temperatures rise above freezing and precipitation changes to rain by about 1 a.m., said Trent Davis, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Mount Holly.

Rain will continue into Monday morning and will likely wash away any snow that manages to stick at the Shore, Davis said.

South Jersey could see some snow in the evening, but it's expected to change over to rain quickly, with an accumulation of less than an inch.
