Police investigating shooting death of man in Fairview

Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old Fairview man who was found dead in his apartment on Fourth Street Saturday night, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

The death has been ruled a homicide and no arrest has been made, said Chief of Detectives Robert Anzilotti of the Prosecutor's Office.

Police responded to the house at about 8 p.m. Saturday and found the unidentified victim in the ground-floor apartment.

Outside the brick-facade duplex on Fourth Street, yellow police tape could be seen Sunday morning, and a Fairview police car was parked near the building as neighbors went about their business.

Police tape can be seen surrounding a house in Fairview on Sunday, June 30, 2019.

A man who lives across the street from where the shooting occurred, and asked that his name not be published, said he and his wife were finishing a walk with their three dogs Saturday when they heard what sounded like three gunshots around 6:45 p.m.

He and his wife then headed back into their house to pack for an upcoming move to Passaic County. The man said that 20 minutes later he saw three or four police cruisers arrive. A neighbor called him to say someone across the street had been fatally shot, the man said.

He said he reached out to the Fairview Police Department and gave a statement. He declined to elaborate on what he told the police but did say that while on his walk he noticed three unfamiliar people on the block.

The block has been a great place to live, the man said, but the timing of his move was perfect.

“In all the neighborhoods I’ve been in, I’ve never experienced anything this close,” he said.

The street, a mix of older single-family homes, newer duplexes and a few businesses, is home to a diverse community of Latinos, Koreans and Italian immigrants, residents said. On one corner is the Fairview School 3 Annex, which during the school year draws students and their parents to the block. St. Joseph the Baptist Church is around the corner and also brings pedestrians to the street, residents said.
