Heavy rain, thunderstorms expected in New Jersey between Friday night and Saturday afternoon

New Jersey should expect wet weather this weekend as heavy rain and possible thunderstorms roll in from Friday into Saturday.

North Jersey

Heavy rain is expected for North Jersey, beginning Friday night and continuing through Saturday with up to 2 inches of rain expected, said Tim Morrin, meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Brookhaven office.

Morrin said there is a chance for thunderstorms Friday night and that the storm will be a "soaker." In areas of poor drainage, ponding and flooding is possible.

There are chances of showers Saturday night and Sunday could see a scattered shower or two. Temperatures on Friday should hit the low 70s while Saturday and Sunday see temperatures in the mid-60s, which Morrin said is average for this time of the year.

Over the past 90 days, North Jersey has received more rainfall than normal. Bergen has received 12.1 inches, 1.5 inches over the average for the time period. Passaic has received 12.8 inches, a surplus of 1.7 inches. Morris has received 12.3 inches, a surplus of 1.3 inches. Hudson has received 12.5, a surplus of 1.5. Essex has received 12.4, a surplus of 1.5

Also, all drinking water reservoirs in North Jersey are at 100 percent capacity, a luxury as the next few months typically see increased water usage. The reservoirs operated by Suez along the Hackensack, including in Oradell and Woodcliff Lake, are at capacity, when traditionally they are at 84 percent full at this point in the year. The Wanaque and backup Monksville reservoirs operated by the North Jersey District water Supply Commission are also at capacity. Normally they are about 91 percent full this time of year.

Central and South Jersey

Heavy rain is also expected to begin in Central and South Jersey in the evening and continue throughout the night into Saturday morning, tapering off into showers and heading north, said Alex Staarmann, meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Mount Holly office. Staarmann said the area could get between 1 inch to 1.5 inches of rain.

There is a high chance of coastal flooding during the evening tides for Thursday and Friday, Staarmann said.

"All of the coastal areas of New Jersey are expected to get minor coastal flooding," Staarmann said. "That is the result of persistent southerly onshore winds along with heavy precipitation."

Temperatures on Friday are expected to hit the low to mid-70s but the Jersey Shore area will be colder, temperatures hitting closer to the 60s.

After the rain begins to taper off on Saturday morning, there will be a chance of showers for most of the day and will be overcast with temperatures hitting the mid- to upper 60s. For Sunday, the day will be overcast and also a chance of showers while temperatures sit in the low to mid-60s.
