During this time, Dan has continued to support his students and set work online.

Members of James Calvert Spence College’s Design and Technology (D&T) department have also been doing their bit, with help from colleagues at Duchess’s Community High School.

Teachers sourced materials and made protective visors, with Duchess’s Community High School providing their laser cutter machine for the project.

Director of Art & Design, Jane Yuill, is now in the process of allocating the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to local medical key workers and businesses, with plans to make more and deliver them in coming weeks.

Some of the visors will be used by James Calvert Spence College’s kitchen staff.

“We are lucky to have a team of very talented and community-minded staff here at James Calvert Spence College and we are so proud they have volunteered their specialist skills to help where they can,” said Sue Currie, chair of governors at James Calvert Spence College.

“I would like to thank them for their efforts and extend that thanks to our neighbours at Duchess’s Community High School in Alnwick for working together with us to produce the much-needed visors.”

Both schools have been closed since March 20. Plans for the reopening of secondary schools remain unclear.
