Tree felling work is being carried out by Northumberland Estates for safety reasons near the Greenwell Road car parks.

An Estates spokesperson explained: “We are carrying out the works due to health and safety issues with the larger trees, some of which were becoming unsafe due to their age, with the potential to cause damage with branches landing in the car park below. Several had already blown over.

“Most of the trees being removed are sycamores and, although it looks a little bare at present, once the felling is finished, the area will be landscaped and new trees planted.

“This will take place in the New Year and the new planting will include beech, limes, ornamental cherries and maples. Hopefully this will enhance the look of the area over time as the new planting matures.”
