Over 100 residents came forward when the town council asked for volunteers four weeks ago.

Mayor Lynda Wearn said: “The response from the people of Alnwick has been absolutely fantastic.

“Without people coming forward to volunteer we would not have been able to help those who need it most.

“Our volunteers and town councillors have been involved in a number of activities over the last few weeks including leaflet dropping, collecting prescriptions, picking up shopping and making phone calls to give comfort to those in isolation alone.

“We have also been working with other voluntary groups such as the Lions and the outstanding team at the food bank. The response to the crisis has really shown the town at its best and I, on behalf of the town council, would sincerely like to thank all those involved.”

The largest number of requests have come from people requiring prescriptions and emergency food parcels.

The town council is coordinating a daily collection service which is currently delivering around 100 prescriptions every week through its volunteers.

It is also supporting the food bank as demand for emergency food parcels has dramatically increased in recent weeks.

A twice weekly delivery service has been established with local organisation NEED providing transport free of charge.

In the last three weeks alone the food bank has provided for over 300 people in the Alnwick district.
