With only second remaining at Dens Park on Sunday, it looked as if Aberdeen were going to end one of the worst weeks of Derek McInnes’ lengthy time in charge of the club.
The week begun with a 1-0 loss to St Mirren. It was then followed by the 2-0 loss to Rijeka which ended the Europa League campaign.
Now the Dons were 1-0 down to Dundee, and were facing an exit from the Betfred Cup. However, Andrew Considine popped up with an injury time equaliser to put the game into extra time.
Dons escaped with a narrow victory
The prolific Sam Cosgrove made the score 2-1 to Aberdeen in extra time, and the Dons escaped Dens Park with a win.
If might not have been Aberdeen’s best performance, but it was a much-needed victory.
However, only time will tell if the goal manages to turn Aberdeen’s season around. That might be a drastic statement. But it would have been a real blow to the Dons to exit two cup competitions in a matter of days.
Response to victory will be telling
How Aberdeen respond to this cup lifeline will be interesting. Their next two fixtures before the international break are winnable.
They face a trip to Kilmarnock and a hope match against Ross County. Two wins in those gamed would show that the Dons are on their way to turning their season around.
Anything less than six points though, and it could prove to be a false dawn.
