Syrian refugee lands top prize as Nottingham Post Education Awards honour the best of our schools

A Syrian refugee who moved to the UK just two years ago has been named Student of the Year at the Nottingham Post Education Awards 2018 thanks to his hard work and incredible creative flair.

Bilal Batous, 15, who joined Carlton Academy in February 2017 after being relocated to the UK with his family, spent much of his first months in one-to-one sessions learning English - but gradually started to demonstrate an impressive flair for art.

Despite having no previous experience of the subject, the teenager’s skills have flourished and he is predicted a bright future by teachers.

“The people and students at school here have helped me get used to the country - I like Nottingham a lot,” he told Nottinghamshire Live. “I would like to learn more about engineering and be a robot programmer one day.”

Nine-year-old girl raises £900 for charity by swapping birthday presents for donations

A nine-year-old girl has raised £900 for charity after she decided to swap her usual birthday presents for donations over the last two years.

Nancy Fox asked her friends, who she invited to her birthday parties, to donate some money instead of buying her gifts in a bid to help others.

Nancy raised £500 last year and was so astounded by her achievement, she hauled-in a further £400 for her birthday this year on November 7.

The young fundraiser donated the money to Rainbows, a hospice for children and young people who have life-limiting conditions and disabilities, after the charity delivered a presentation to her school, Nottingham Girls High School.

Revealed: The shocking places where Nottingham's homeless people sleep

The struggles homeless people in Nottingham face in trying to find shelter were laid bare with shocking pictures revealing the harrowing places where people have slept.

Some found cover in a fire hatch within a multi-storey car park while others have slept in waste bins.

Figures, from last month, revealed an estimated 34 people were sleeping rough in Nottingham every night.

Each year, local councils submit a figure to the Government of how many rough sleepers there are on any particular night. The 2017 figure for Nottingham city was 43 - up from three in 2010.

Outreach workers patrol the city from 5am each morning to check-up on individuals known to them - and they also visit new people who have been reported to them overnight.
