A community has been left shocked after a school lollipop lady was hit by a car.

The school crossing patrol worker, who works on The Lane in Awsworth was involved in an incident outside Awsworth Primary and Nursery School on Monday (December 10) at around 3.40pm.

Nottinghamshire Police are now investigating and parents have been advised to cross further up the road at a pelican crossing while she is not working.

The extent of her injuries are not clear at this stage.

Chairman of Awsworth Parish Council, Graham Spencer, said he was frustrated and upset to hear of the incident.

He said: "I am very upset about the incident and I am upset the lady has been injured. I am shocked but I am not surprised.

"A few weeks ago we had a very similar incident too.

"There is a school and a nursery on this road and this is children's safety - something has to be done.

"The traffic through the village has always been a problem. Traffic around Ikea Island is not managed correctly so our village has become a rat run."

Mr Spencer also said the parking on the street had led to issues around visibility when crossing the roads.

He added: "While there is no lollipop lady on the road I would advise parents who can walk to school in the morning to do so, we need to reduce traffic on that road and cross safely at the pelican crossing."

Following the incident, Awsworth Parish Council released a statement saying: "Awsworth Parish Council are very saddened and disappointed to hear that the Lollipop Lady was hit by a car yesterday afternoon whilst undertaking her duties helping others to cross the road."

Suzanne Heydon, on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council said: “A School Crossing Patrol working on behalf Via was involved in an incident in Awsworth yesterday afternoon.

“The incident has been reported Nottinghamshire Police to investigate further. We wish her a speedy recovery and advise parents that the patrol will not be operating until after the Christmas break.”

Nottinghamshire Police are now investigating the incident.

A spokesman said: “Our enquiries are ongoing. Anyone who saw the collision or who has any information is urged to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 534 of 10 December 2018.”
