Man who used to help homeless before stroke thanks NHS for helping him to walk and speak again

A man who helped the homeless in his spare time was left unable to walk or talk after a major stroke.

But today he has thanked the NHS staff who helped him to regain his speech.

In December 2018, Nigel Paynter was cleaning his house when he collapsed, with his wife Samantha coming home to find him on the floor semi-conscious and unable to talk.

The 61 year old, who lives in Ruddington, had suffered a serious stroke and spent the next three and a half months recovering in hospital, where he was also diagnosed with a defective heart valve.

Lane closed on M1 after car breaks down

One lane on the M1 northbound has been closed due to a broken down car.

The lane closure affects traffic from junction 24 to junction 25.

Traffic is reportedly coping well.

Police warning over scam phone calls from people claiming to be from BT

Police have issued a warning after a number of scam phone calls were made from people claiming to be from BT.

Broxtowe North Police, which covers Eastwood, Kimberley, Nuthall and nearby areas, said residents in Nuthall have reported “suspicious telephone calls”.

The caller, who claims to be working on behalf of BT, says the customer’s line will be cut off if they do not agree to go to one of their extensions.

Road is closed due to safety reasons after asbestos is dumped

Ollerton Road in Retford after bags of asbestos were dumped.

Due to the “serious nature” of the type of asbestos in the bags, Bassetlaw Council has been instructed by the Health and Safety Executive to close the road until further notice.

Rainbow flags put up across Nottingham to mark day homosexuality stopped being classed as a mental illness

A number of organisations across Nottinghamshire will be flying a rainbow flag to mark the day homosexuality stopped being classed as a mental illness by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The brightly coloured flag, which symbolises LGBTQIA pride movements, is flying high above Old Market Square on the council house throughout May 17 as part of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

Mansfield Sandhurst ward by-election date

The Sandhurst ward in Mansfield will be having a by-election after Andy Abrahams, who was elected as the new mayor on the same day, won the seat.

Mansfield District Council said you cannot stand as mayor and councillor for a ward.

The by-election will be taking place on June 27.

Man arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill

A 21-year-old man has today been arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and criminal damage.

He is currently being questioned in connection with the incidents in Lime Tree Road, Hucknall, which happened today and on Wednesday.

Police hunt man after arson attack at hair salon in Brinsley

Police are hunting a man in a camouflage-style jacket following an arson attack which left a hairdressing salon with extensive damage.

The arsonist struck in the early hours of Friday, March 15, at Snipits in Church Lane, Brinsley.

Police want to speak to a man in connection with the incident.

He was seen wearing a camouflage-style jacket and believed to be carrying a plastic container (as pictured) and a spray bottle.

A man was seen outside the shop just before 3am before he ran off along Church Lane towards St James’ Church.

  • A52 DERBY ROAD - NOTTINGHAM - INBOUND - NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. A52 Derby Road inbound busy but moving between A6007 Ilkeston Road / A52 Brian Clough Way / B5010 Derby Road (Bramcote Island) and A6514 Clifton Boulevard (The Qmc Island). Travel time is seven minutes.
