'Everyone was quite concerned'

Sue Smith, 57, who has lived in Beech Avenue opposite the flat for five years, said: “There were loads of flames coming out of the window out the back.

“We saw it at quarter to six this morning. It was a bit of a shock hearing all of the sirens and seeing the flashing lights.

“We could smell the smoke. The road was all cordoned off and they were on the roof of the flat making sure it was all safe.

“It looks like it started in the kitchen from the back window. Everyone was quite concerned.”

'Everyone was worried'

Surekha Rana, 64, who has owned the nearby Rylands Top Shop for 35 years, said she rents out the flat next door to the flat affected.

She said: “The flat next door is ours, we rent it out to students.

“I got in at 7am today and everyone kept coming in saying there were so many fire engines and I saw the police cars.

“The man who lives there came in [to the shop] and I asked him if he was alright.

He said he was fine. “Everyone was worried because it’s so local. I’m just glad everyone is safe, that’s the main thing.”
