From mushy peas and incense to jewellery and pet supplies, you're bound to find something you love at Nottingham's Victoria Market.

The historic market, located in the intu Victoria Centre, has been serving customers for more than 100 years.

Shoppers can also take a break from browsing at one of the five restaurants and cafés in the market.

We went to meet some of the owners behind the wide range of businesses housed in the market.

Traders explained how every person who enters the market is a potential customer to their stall and there was a great community spirit between each business.

Claire Fisher, 40, of West Bridgford, has owned the Mushy Peas Stall for three years.

She said: "I was a chef in a pub and have a small child. When I heard people were missing the historic mushy peas stall I decided to come and bring it back.

"I really like working in the market. Every other trader is really supportive of one another.

"You get people who used to come to the stall as a kid with their parents or grandparents coming back when they're older to show their children the same thing. I used to come as a kid and get my school uniform from here.

"I do think there's something for everyone here."

Liz Clark, has owned the Lizian Crystal and Incense stall for 14 years and said every visitor to the market is a potential customer for every stall.

She said: "The market used to be the iconic place where people shopped before there were supermarkets and big department stores.

"People who come through the market talk about their memories as a child when visiting.

"Supporting smaller local independent businesses is vital as you're putting money into the economy rather than the big corporate companies."

New to the market in November 2018, Sam Wray sells handmade jewellery and custom-made orders through Witchyoble.

She said: "Coming to the market initially I was a bit apprehensive as the new stall on the block, I though it my be a bit of a clique.

"But that's not how it is at all. Everyone is so supportive. And every trader is an expert in their own field.

"People who come here we hope to spend a bit of time here having a look around the different stalls."

Rob Tomlinson, 58, owns pet store Supapets and has been based in the market since 2012.

He said: "When people come into the market to shop you hope they find you and realise you're here and then keep coming back to you.

"The wide range of stalls for people is what keeps people spending time here."

A Nottingham City Council spokesman said: “We’re proud that our markets have been serving local communities for over 100 years and they continue to offer the value and choice they always have.

"We recognise how very important they are to our local communities, offering value for money while also supporting independent traders.

“Victoria Centre Market is our only indoor market, open six days a week, which with upgrades in recent years remains popular and continues to provide a varied and diverse range of shopping.”
