Metro Bank is "very close" to opening a branch inside one of Nottingham's prime retail units.

Concerns were raised about the organisation's plans for the city in May when "all enquiries" signs were placed outside its planned outlet on the corner of Clumber Street, opposite the intu Victoria Centre.

But discussing the organisation's plans for the East Midlands overall, a bank official has confirmed a deal to open in Nottingham is close. A spokesperson also confirmed the bank was still looking at 46/48.

Ian Walters, managing director of retail and business banking, said: “We have plans for the East Midlands which we will probably do next year.

“We try to do it in a coherent way that makes sense.

“We are locked and loaded for Leicester, Nottingham we are very close (to signing on a property) and we want to be in Derby but we’re not quite sure where.

“Nottingham we are at an advance stage of reviewing a particular site."

Metro Bank unveiled its vision to move to Nottingham last April and said the new branch would act as a "hub for the local community", hosting networking and charity events. It would also create 25 local jobs.

According to retail property consultant GCW, which is overseeing the deal for 46/48 Clumber Street, the property is now "under offer" .

A Metro Bank spokesperson added: "As the revolution in British banking, we're always looking at various potential sites for new stores."
