There were many executions in Nottingham from the 1800s until capital punishment was abolished in 1965.

Criminals who had been found guilty of terrible crimes such as rape and murder would be sentenced to death - often by hanging.

But back in the 1800s it wasn't just crimes such as this that people found themselves at the mercy of the executioner.

Crimes such as forgery, arson and highway robbery were also punishable by death in the early 1800s.

A website named Capital Punishment UK details all of those executed in the UK, including those in Nottinghamshire.

Many of the early executions took pace at Nottingham Gallows Hill, with the last taking place in 1827, before then moving to High Pavement where the National Justice Museum stands.
