Pictures have been released showing how work is progressing inside Nottingham Castle.

The £30 million project to create a new era at Nottingham Castle is now well under way, with a world-class heritage site taking shape.

Virtual-reality experiences, tales of Nottingham's rebellious heritage and international touring exhibitions are all set to bring the castle to life.

Work started last summer, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Government's D2N2 local enterprise partnership, Nottingham Castle Trust and Nottingham City Council.

The changes are expected to bring a boost of £90 million to the city's economy and the annual number of visitors could double to 400,000 in the first year after work is completed.

The project is being led by G F Tomlinson, which has 60 to 80 local workers a day on-site.

Images released by the contractors working on the site show the archways which will become an interactive zone as part of the Robin Hood Gallery.

Another picture shows the roof of the Ducal palace being repaired and the new Visitor Centre can also be seen taking shape.

According to those working on the project work will be finished at the end of 2020. However, the opening date won't be at the same time.

It is estimated that it will take around eight weeks to get the castle ready for the huge influx of people it will be expecting.

Ted Cantle, the chair of the Nottingham Castle Trust, said: "It will probably be early 2021 that it will open to the public, we don't have an exact date yet.

"After the work is finished we will be installing all the audio and visual effects and we will have to train a team of people and test out all the rooms."

The costs of the experience have not yet been revealed but it has been estimated that a full adult ticket will be around £14.

Mr Cantle said: "We have done a lot of research on other attractions which are similar to this one to see how much they charge and we have worked out that the going rate for these sort of outings is around £14.

"We haven't made a decision on the exact cost yet but we know that we will be looking at concessions for Nottingham residents."

What has the new chief executive said?

The new chief executive of Nottingham Castle has vowed to make it one of the top tourist attractions in the country.

Sara Blair-Manning has been appointed to lead the delivery of the castle regeneration and said she will particularly focus on making it into a world-class site for the thousands of visitors she is expected to bring in every day.

She told Nottinghamshire Live: "We are turning this into something that will be the most visited tourist attraction outside of London. It needs to become the flagship of the city and that is what it will be.

"My focus is going to be on the visitors and we are looking at getting 350,000 to 400,000 people through the doors every year.

"It is going to have a huge visitor focus. I want it to be a place where people want to come back as well as a place for children, tourists and adults."
