When Paige Hart was walking home from the pub with her boyfriend William Maddock, the couple thought they'd stop in at a takeaway for their favourite order of chicken, chips and a kebab wrap.

As an extra treat, Paige decided to order a corn on the cob to go with the meal.

But when they got back and unwrapped their food, they couldn't believe what they'd been given.

Instead of a sweet, buttery corn on the cob, Paige had literally been given some sweetcorn - on a cob.

"We were in hysterics," said Paige, a 24-year-old carer from Carlton. "We got back, opened it, and I was looking forward to corn on the cob - and it wasn't what we expected. "

She added: "The sweetcorn kept falling off the cob."

Paige and William, a 32-year-old decorator from Top Valley, had been out for a drink at the Samuel Hall pub in Mansfield Road, Sherwood, last Thursday (February 9), and were walking back along Mansfield Road when they decided to stop at the Grill Town takeaway.

"We go there all the time," said Paige.

Paige didn't eat the snack - although as a Nottingham girl, she agrees that 'cob' is the proper name for a bread roll.

People have been piling on to social media to say how funny they think the whole incident is.

But one person added: "Technically it is correct. Plus extra points for them knowing a local colloquialism."

Paige said she thought there might have been a language issue when she placed her order, and staff hadn't understood what she wanted.

But this morning Nottinghamshire Live spoke to Grill Town, and the man who served her there - called Kash - said he was just playing a practical joke.

"We don't have corn on the cob on the menu," he said, "but I gave her that for free. I didn't charge her for it.

"They are regulars, and I was just trying to make her happy. I knew I was making a joke."
