Notts Outlaws could be without James Pattinson for their Royal London One Day Cup semi-final - but they have a replacement waiting in the wings.

Pattinson has a slight side strain that makes him a concern for the game against Somerset at Trent Bridge on Sunday (11am start).

Given the fast bowler's injury history, admittedly with back problems, and his ongoing bid to get in Australia's Ashes squad, it is likely Notts will err on the side of caution with the 29-year-old.

"We're always cautious with him because he's a premier bowler. We also understand the situation he is in," said head coach Peter Moores.

"Sides you have to be very careful with, especially with quick bowlers. He had stiffness after the last game so is having ongoing treatment."

The potential absence of Pattinson could be mitigated by the return of Harry Gurney, who will be in the squad after his time in the Indian Premier League.

Moores would have no qualms about bringing in a player who has enjoyed success around the world playing Twenty20 cricket in recent months.

"Harry adds to (bowling coach Any Pick) Picky's bowling cartel, as he likes to call it. Harry has been training with us for the last few days," he said.

"The skills in 50 over and 20 over cricket are very similar when you have Harry's role, bowling at the start and end of innings.

"Harry is a proven bowler in 50 over cricket so it's great for us to have him back. It wouldn't be a case of him walking back in.

"He's been here for a number of years and it's a first for him to have been to the IPL. Him coming back does give us a selection headache.

"It's a good position for me and (captain) Steve Mullaney to be in because we know how good he is."

England bowler Stuart Broad has not been made available, but he is set to play in the County Championship match against Essex, which starts on Tuesday.

All-rounder Paul Coughlin is definitely out as the club waits to learn the full extent of his hamstring injury.

Coughlin will see a specialist next week with the club keen for him see a specific doctor who can review his scan.

"We know it's a bad hamstring problem and we want the right advice. It will be a fairly long-term problem," Moores said.

"He won't be playing in the next couple of weeks."

Serious hamstring injuries can take months to recover from in worst case scenarios.

In better news, batsman Ben Slater should be fit after a quad strain, while Alex Hales has settled back into the squad well following his three week ban.

Notts go into the game with home advantage and two extra days rest after Somerset thrashed Worcestershire by 147 runs in the quarter-finals today.

"It's a good thing because after this we go back into four day cricket. It's nice to have a couple of extra days to recharge," Moores said.

"Our home form has been good. Everyone loves playing at Trent Bridge. You want your home ground to be an advantage.

"We know the sort of game we have to play to win and we're going to have to play well against a good team."
