Nottingham's newest hair salon has been designed with kids, and only kids, in mind but that doesn't mean grown-ups won't get jealous.

With its musical police car, sit-in plane, kids' cartoons on demand and PS4, Kool Kidz Cutz, in Birchwood Road, Wollaton, certainly knows how to keep little ones entertained while having a trim.

"Some parents have even asked me if the kids can stay here while they go into town," laughs salon owner Anne Duggan, who also runs two men's barber shops.

Opened on Saturday June 15, the concept is a dream 10 years in the making for the 49-year-old Wollaton mum.

Anne had desires of opening it in the back room of one of her existing businesses, Wollaton Barber Shop, but it was occupied by a ladies' hairdresser and had been for some years.

"I've always wanted to open a kids' salon," says Anne, "Then after 14 years the ladies' hairdressers moved upstairs so I jumped at the chance."

Anne's first move was asking clients' kids what was fashionable at the moment.

"I obviously don't watch kids TV so I wanted to know what was 'in'. They said Toy Story, LEGO and Spiderman," she says.

Anne, who also owns Beechdale Barber, then hired a graffiti artist to spruce up the walls with murals of kids' TV and film favourites including a princess-themed corner with Frozen characters.

For children aged 0-3 there is a sit-in plane and police car to keep wriggly little ones in place while they have a trim.

"They are very noisy," says Anne referring to the kids seats which play songs and have sound effects.

On screens around the salon children's cartoons play such as Peppa Pig and for the older children (4-10 years of age) there's PS4.

"They can play it while they are waiting or even while they are sitting in the chair having their hair cut," says Anne.

The salon is currently advertising for a new member of staff but in the meantime hair stylists from the Beechdale Barbers are helping out.

"If it all goes well we may even open another one," says Anne.

Haircuts cost £7.50 for 0-3, 4-10 is £9, and £10 on Saturdays.
