A Nottingham restaurant which has been on the scene for 26 years has closed to the dismay of customers.

Paul Shaw, the owner of Encounters, announced the news "with a heavy heart."

The cosy restaurant, in Mansfield Road, was a favourite for many, whose rave reviews described it "a must try" and "amazing."

As well as its legendary prawn cocktail, the restaurant was known for its pudding and prosecco nights.

Mr Shaw said: "It’s been quite the ride, and I am beyond proud to have been part of Nottingham’s incredible restaurant scene with my own humble slice of life, for 26 years.

"There are 709,000 hours in the average human lifespan. I thank each and every one of you for spending a couple of those with me at Encounters. You came as customers and left as friends. Farewell."

Customer Jacqui Leigh described it as a unique, quirky place.

She said: "I’m so sad. I’ve had birthday parties, Mother’s Day lunches, my retirement meal, my civil partnership celebration, and several Christmas parties, with Paul allowing us to perform our own entertainment.  After our meal Paul would convert the front into a disco so we could have a bop and also put on our home grown pantomimes.

"Of all the closures, this is the one I will miss the most. I've grown older with Encounters. Paul is a character. His kindness, prawn cocktails and his restaurant are legendary."

Jacqui remembers the property when it used to be Judges bakery. She said: "I found the most stunning thing when I was waiting for my cob to be made up - the beautiful stained glass windows and Edwardian glass display cases. When Paul converted it to his restaurant he kept all the stained glass and other period fixtures and fittings."

Fans flooded Encounters' Facebook page with farewell messages, wishing Mr Shaw well.

Kate Andrews said: "So sorry to hear this as I have lots of fantastic memories of amazing food, brilliant themed evenings and outstanding hosts. However, if this means you get a chance to kick back and relax then I am very happy for you, it’s very well deserved."

Simon Hardwick posted: "The most generous portions of quality food served up by the most convivial host. ALL of our family do's were hosted here and I have many fond memories of this place. Thanks Paul. So much. I genuinely loved the place."
